LENSES OF PERCEPTION

This quarter-long study abroad program in Berlin, Germany was titled "Berlin. Stories. Struggles. Strategies." coordinated by Nicole Huber through the University of Washington. The design portion of this program was independently selected and carried out. My project utilized the "Be Berlin" campain frames found across the city to interrupt the perfect picture the city had framed for the tourist. Through our time in Berlin, we heard stories and spoke to people who consider themselves "Berliners". The wall may have come down, but the city is still fraught with tension where two sides are still at war. I chose two sites for my installations, one at the O2 Arena next to the Spree in the continuously controversial area of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, and the second at the main transit station "Hauptbahnhof", which also framed the beloved Reichstag. The first installation at the the O2 arena was to allow the tourist to see Berlin through the eyes of a Berliner using glasses found at flea markets across the city. The second installation at the Hauptbahnhof allowed the user to choose the way they see the city. Each color is psychologically associated to an emotion, so through which color does the city align with your perception of it?
