A SODO GREYHOUND BUS STATION, SEATTLE, WA

The future site for Seattle’s Greyhound bus terminal is located in an industrial center, situated between a multi-level highway overpass and a concrete parking garage. The tall structures cast the site in shadows during most of the day. The building design proposes height and open spaces to bring in light to create a spacious and bright bus terminal. The light in the building will serve several purposes. One, it will provide a comfortable respite for the weary traveler, up and away from the chaos of the street. Second, it will serve to keep the terminal safe by keeping eyes and ears on passengers at all times. Each space is open to the others by sight, sound, or both, so the travelers feel safe while awaiting their bus departures at all hours of the day and night. The north facade follows the form of the overpass with an extruded steel screen which will allow light into the building while forming a visual and auditory separation. The structure is spaced according to the size of each bus bay and is situated along the building perimeter. The roof is a series of sawtooth clerestory windows to maximize ambient natural lighting.
